There I was... at a tiny AHP in peacetime
West Germany. We had a pack of the local equivalent of Cub
Scouts taking a tour of the helipad, and a lowly Spec/4
(yours truly) was dispatched to the nearest Huey to
broadcast on the radio, so the kids could hear what a
helicopter sounds like on the radio in the shack.
"This is 12345, we're inverted at 40 thousand feet.
Request a straight-in approach." I just said the
first/most dramatic sounding thing that popped into my
head. I never thought about the fact that when I keyed
that mike, nobody else who heard that transmission all
across Europe knew it was just for the benefit of a few
kids.
